Machine Learning Intern

At Basecamp Research we're looking for a Machine Learning Intern to join our team.
Internship · Head Office (Farringdon, London)

Who we are

At Basecamp Research we believe the future of the biotech industry will be built upon the combination of foundational data sets, constructed from the wealth of diversity we see in nature, with state of the art AI algorithms. This is why  we are building the largest, most sophisticated, entirely ethically sampled database of natural biodiversity in existence, because we know that biodiversity is one of our planet's most important and valuable assets. For many of our most pressing problems, we believe nature has already found an answer.

About the job

The machine learning team at Basecamp Research is primarily focused on delivering protein sequences which can solve our customers biggest challenges. To this effect we work with state of the art generative models of protein sequence and structure to design completely novel proteins. We are also focused on expanding our knowledge of functional protein space, this entails annotating the functional dark matter with state of the art deep learning tools. These ambitious goals necessitate progress on a broad spectrum of machine learning problems and require creative solutions and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

We are a small team and so we encourage new joiners to take full ownership of their work from day one, with full support from the members of the team. Your work will have high visibility and a chance to make a real impact on the culture of machine learning at Basecamp Research. We offer the chance to collaborate with world leading researchers and academic advisors who are leaders in their field.

What does the role entail

  • Benchmark state of the art deep learning methods for protein generation and function prediction.

  • Contribute to a project which can expand the capabilities of our internal design and annotation tools.

  • Explore ways in which our diverse data set can be harnessed to its fullest potential.

  • The duration of the internship should last a minimum of 3 months.

  • This is a paid internship opportunity.

About you

Required:

  • A self starter, comfortable working on open ended research problems.

  • Proficiency in Python.

  • Experience working with deep learning tools such as PyTorch and with using large, pre-trained deep learning models.

  • Currently pursuing a graduate degree in computational biology, computer science, statistics, mathematics or a related field.

  • Experience working with deep learning models for proteins or DNA.

Advantageous:

  • Publication record on machine learning applied to the life sciences.

  • Prior work experience in a machine learning team.

We pride ourselves on a workplace which is diverse, inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Our team of 30 represent 14 nationalities and even more languages. We’re 30% women and 50% of us hold a PhD. We have backgrounds ranging from diplomats and soil experts to cancer researchers.
