Bioinformatics Intern
About Us
Basecamp Research is a market leader in mapping biodiversity for AI-based design of biological systems. With the world’s largest biological database built from biodata collected from every corner of the world, often in unexplored locations and biomes, we are able to create a foundational dataset tailored for AI. This leads to tremendous opportunities to both expand basic understanding of biology but also tackle some of the toughest challenges in the life sciences.
Basecamp Research is backed by leaders across technology, life sciences and biopharma and collaborates with global organisations such as Nvidia, Johnson Matthey, and world-leading academic labs such as the David Liu Lab of the Broad Institute. Recognized as one of Bloomberg’s Top 25 UK Startups to Watch for 2024, we are at the forefront of innovation, pushing the boundaries of AI-driven biological discovery.
The role
We are looking for a passionate and motivated intern to join our team and contribute to improving our data generation and curation operations.
You will will work under supervision of the Genomics and Bioinformatics team, and work closely with the sequencing R&D team and data engineering team in providing bioinformatic support and NGS genomic analyses.
What this internship aims to provide:
Opportunity to work on biodiversity genomics and cutting edge data science not readily accessible on academic campuses
Hands-on experience in a variety of state-of-the-art software and data tools used in computational genomics and data science for both analyses, engineering and management of data.
Collaborate with scientists, engineers and researchers to analyse novel data and present in an internal group setting
-
Gain hands-on experience with cloud computing and high-performance computing environments.
What you will do:
Primary Project: Investigating use of k-mer sketching methods for analysis of large sequence databases.
Work with large-scale metagenomic datasets from both second and third generation sequencing technologies.
Conduct an independent research project focusing on benchmarking and optimising bioinformatic tools.
Troubleshoot and interpret experimental results, report findings to stakeholders, and provide feedback to inform subsequent experiments.
Develop and optimise bioinformatics pipelines using programming languages such as python, R, and bash.
Build dashboards and/or visualisations on sequence based analyses using in house tools to share results with internal stakeholders
Maintain detailed records of the work conducted.
